The law allows the State or any interested individual to file a Child in Need of Care (CINC, pronounced “sink”) case where that person reasonably believes that a child is being abused or neglected. The goal of a CINC case is first to provide for the safety of the child and second, to provide the parents a path to re-unifying the family. Many parents are able to address issues in the family and recover custody of their children. Sadly, some parents are unwilling or unable to fully satisfy the requirements of reunification, and in those cases, the Court has the authority to terminate their parental rights.
