Divorce

Divorce: A court case filed by a married person seeking an order of the Court that ends the marriage. The Court has the authority to end the marriage, to divide property and debt, to order spousal maintenance (sometimes called alimony) and to make orders regarding the children of the parties.

Post-divorce motions

Post-divorce motions: Issues regarding the end of the marriage and the division of property and debt are final when the Court issues its final order in the divorce case. That final document is called a divorce decree. After the issuance of the decree, however, the Court continues to have the authority to change orders relating to the children, until the children are grown, as well as orders of spousal maintenance.

Name Change

A person can change his or her name to any reasonable name. While many people change their names at times of marriage, divorce or adoption, the law provides the Court the authority to change a person’s name, provided they are not seeking to evade creditors.

Civil Restraining Orders

There are certain cases where a person may feel threatened by another and desires the protection of the Courts, but whose case is not the type for which a PFA or PFS can be issued. In that case, the Courts have the authority to issue orders of restraint, commanding an abusive person to stay away from their intended victim.
